DAYS OF CHILL

Winter Comfort Food (INDIA)

Winter is the fine time for food !
Chilly air, warm sun and a palette of warm winter food. With every new season comes the seasonal food and this season in itself is a celebration of food. The best times to enjoy all kinds of hearty delicacies is winter, you don’t have to worry about how much hot it is or anything else, only eat and enjoy. One thing you must know that a body’s digestive system works at its best in winters which results in providing a good amount of nutrition to it and helps in building strong immunity.
As winter breaks in with a breeze of cold air it brings in the aroma of rich seasonal food. Nature has its own way of keeping the body warm and hence there are some particular foods that should be consumed in winters.
There are lot of comfort foods around the world for this perfect season, I am an Indian and I have my few  favourites which are full of nutritions.
  1. Smoked or Roasted peanuts -Peanuts are rich in antioxidants. These nuts also provide warmth to our system. Peanuts are a good source of vitamin E and B3. What’s more, because it is a good source of monounsaturated fats, it is a heart-friendly food too .

2. Sarson ka Saag and Makki Roti
Another ideal winter food combination is sarson ka saag (mustard greens) with makki ki roti (corn-flour bread). If you don’t like makki ki roti, you could eat the saag with bajra ki roti, another winter specialty.  Sarson is a pungent winter green and its flavor is enhanced by other warming spices like ginger and garlic when the saag is made. Makki is a complex carbohydrate and a terrific source of fiber. In fact, it’s the perfect food to keep you warm and energized on cold days.

3. Gaajar ka Halva (Carrot Halva)
This dish is warm and makes you feel the heat. And since its sweet, it gives you a burst of energy and zing. But it is a good Idea to use skimmed milk and oil instead of ghee to lower the calorie count. I recommend cooking a larger  quantity of carrots for sweetness in order to decrease the amount of sugar needed.

4. Pakoras and chai(TEA)
Nothing can lift one’s mood on a cold, gloomy day, the way pakoras/ bhajjis and a cup of hot tea can.

5. Maggi Noodles :)
This two-minute fix obviously tops the list. Whether in hostel, or at your new, rented apartment, a bowl full of maggi will continue to be our happy food forever. With vegetables, without vegetables, the slightly dry kind or the soupy maggi, these instant noodles are everyone’s favourite.
